Schlandersberg Castle

Using as castle or fortress Schlandersberg designated building is in its origins to a medieval Spur castle in the market town of Schlanders in Vinschgau in South Tyrol . Schlandersberg stands on a bare ridge above the entrance to the Schlandrauntal at an altitude of 1100 meters.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the lords of Montalban and initially inhabited by a branch of the family, the lords of Schlandersberg, as the ancestral seat. In 1329 they had to take the castle from the Tyrolean sovereigns as a fief . However, due to the inhospitable location and the uninviting structure, it soon lost its importance. In 1437, for example, the cousins Hans and Wolf von Schlandersberg settled in Partschins . After the lords of Schlandersberg became extinct in the male line in 1755, the castle passed to Count Hendl , who also owned the rule of Schlanders. They sold the castle to a farmer in 1819. It is not known whether it has been permanently inhabited since then. The last owner, who also lived in the castle, sold the building in the 1990s. It was then carefully rebuilt by local architects, taking into account the preservation of historical monuments and using only materials from the Vinschgau. Care was taken that the character of the castle was preserved. Today there are luxury apartments in the building, viewing is not possible.

The small original castle consisted only of a free-standing residential tower. Examples of similar systems can often be found in the vicinity - such as Goldrain , Annenberg or Latsch . The tower was not extensively expanded with residential extensions until the 16th century. The appearance has hardly changed since then. The residential tower is 19 meters high and has swallowtail pinnacles . In the north-west corner was the chapel in the bay window protruding from the front of the building . The tower has painted mortar joints and stone-framed square windows with side seats.
