The Churburg ( Italian Castel Coira ) is a high medieval castle in the municipality of Schluderns in Vinschgau in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The Churburg is one of the best preserved and most visited castles in South Tyrol.

history

The castle was built around the year 1250 by the Prince-Bishop of Chur , Heinrich I von Montfort . As early as 1297, the complex was owned by the von Matsch gentlemen , with whom the Duchy of Chur was in constant feud .

In 1504, after the death of the last representative of those von Matsch, the meanwhile heavily developed plant came into the hands of the later Counts Trapp . In 1516, Emperor Maximilian I was a guest at the Churburg. In 1537, after disputes over inheritance, the castle finally became the property of the Trapp family on the basis of the Polheim Treaty , and they still own it today.

In the arcade of the castle you can see the family tree of the bailiffs von Matsch and the Count Trapp, which was painted around 1580.

investment

The extensive facility stands on a hill on the Sonnenberg, which by nature offers little security, just above the village center of Schluderns in Vinschgau.

The core of the system consisted only of a very strong castle keep , the Palas and a curtain wall. Around the main castle are several kennels , gates, towers, a Romanesque chapel and a large garden.

The castle, which has never been destroyed, is home to an abundance of richly furnished rooms, paneled and painted rooms with tiled stoves and a library.

Guided tours are offered for a fee.

loggia

The fountain in the courtyard

The arcade of the loggia courtyard was completely furnished with precious wall paintings in bright colors in the 16th century . The vault shows the family tree of the von Matsch and von Trapp families in the form of a quince tree. The walls are adorned with depictions of ancient fables.

armory

The castle's largest private armory in the world contains almost complete equipment for a complete castle crew, a total of more than 50 fully preserved armor , swords and other cutting and thrusting weapons. However, there is a lack of firearms as they were requisitioned during the Napoleonic Wars.

The most striking piece is a 2.10 meter armor from around 1450. The armor, which weighs over 40 kilograms, was made by the Milanese armor, Missaglia . The armor belonged to Ulrich von Matsch .

Jousting

The "South Tyrolean Ritterspiele, Churburg - Schluderns" have been held below the Churburg on an open space next to Schluderns. In addition to the battles on the battlefield, the tournament arena and the main stage, the jousting shows also camp life and the medieval market. The knight game is an attempt to remember the glorious times of the Churburg and the battle of the Calven .
