Stetteneck Castle was a castle on the Col da Pincan , a hill in front of the Pitschberg near Ortisei in Val Gardena ( South Tyrol ).

The castle became known through the legend, told by Karl Felix Wolff , The Castle on the Abyss . Until a few years ago, it was believed that the castle stood on the significantly higher Balest (also an offshoot of the Pitschberg) towering behind it, but remains of the wall were never found there.

In 2000, the remains of the castle were discovered through test drilling by Herwig Prinoth and Stefan Planker from the Museum Ladin (part of the South Tyrolean regional museums ). The site was determined based on the exact interpretation of the description of the castle by Marx Parakeet von Wolkenstein in the 17th century. Through further excavations, large parts of the foundations of the main tower, the protective walls and a gate with a Romanesque arch came to light. Other finds were the iron point of a crossbow bolt , a game stone made of Val Gardena sandstone , the shards of very finely blown glass and oil lamps as well as pottery shards.

The castle goes back to the 13th century, the time of construction is probably before the year 1256. It was about 40 m long and had a 1.8 m thick curtain wall . It remains unclear whether the castle was destroyed by human hands or by a natural disaster.

The knight Gebhard von Stetteneck, the first documented proof of Stettenecker, was a judge in Gufidaun and ministerial of the Brixen bishopric . It was mentioned for the first time on May 13, 1256. That day, the Bishop of Brixen, Bruno von Kirchberg , a nephew of Meinhard II , and his ministerials met on Ritten . Among them is a "Gebehardus de Stetenekke" mentioned. It was about a peace treaty with several ministerials who were guilty of robbing the bishop of his people, traders, etc. and of making the streets unsafe ( robber barons ?). In the peace treaty it was agreed that whoever was guilty of robbery and the like between Säben and Bozen in the next five years would lose all feudal rights and property. In the document Gebehardus de Stetenekke is asked to return the farm "Vishalco".
