The Ladin Museum in South Tyrol's Val Badia deals with the history and culture of Ladinia . The head office of the museum is in Thurn Castle ( Ladin Ćiastel de Tor ) near St. Martin .

Content profile

The museum covers a wide range of different topics. Archaeological finds from Ladinia are shown. Other historical focal points are the rulership rights in the Dolomite valleys and the modern history of tourism . Visitors are also informed about the Ladin language . Folklore aspects are dealt with using local handicrafts , the scientific parts of the exhibition deal with geology and show fossils .

History and organization

In 1996 the state of South Tyrol acquired Thurn Castle (location: ) in order to set up a “Ladin” museum. It was opened in 2001 and has been part of the South Tyrolean provincial museums since 2003 . In 2011 a branch, the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, was opened in St. Kassian in the municipality of Abtei (location: ). In addition to geological exhibits and fossils, it shows the fossil bones of a bear found in a grotto near Piz Cunturines , either a subspecies of the cave bear or when Ursus ladinicus was a species of its own .
