history

Before St. Kassian was permanently settled, the area was used exclusively as pasture for cattle (= armenc), which gave rise to the name Armuntarora-Armentarola (district of St. Kassian in the direction of the Valparola Pass ).

St. Kassian finally got its name from Saint Kassian , to whom the church in the village is consecrated.

In 1296 the names of individual farms in St. Kassian were mentioned for the first time.

  • Church of St. Kassian: built in 1782, main altar with a painting by the artist Carl Henrici from Silesia , on which the martyrdom of St. Kassian is depicted.
  • Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus : The Ladin Museum keeps important testimonies from the history, culture and tradition of the Val Badia. The spectacular find of prehistoric skeletons of a cave bear on September 23, 1987 by the hotelier Willy Costamoling caused a sensation. The age of the remains of this bear species, found in a cave of the Cunturines, is estimated by scientists to be over 9,000 years. Some researchers deduced from the findings that the various ice ages in the Alps could have occurred at shorter intervals than previously assumed.
