The State Archives Bolzano is an Italian state archive in Bolzano .

It was established in 1920 as a section of the new Royal State Archives in Trento and became an independent entity in 1930. Leo Santifaller was appointed as the first director, and when he took up his post in 1921, he was given the vacant Maretsch Castle as an archive building, 150 railway wagons with archives (with the archives of the South Tyrolean authorities and the Brixen monastery ) and a former Austrian police sergeant as an assistant. The archive was set up and accessible to the public within a year, but Santifaller, who was visibly uncomfortable for the fascist rulers, moved to the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Berlin as early as 1927 .

In 1972 Maretsch Castle was declared dilapidated. After a few years of makeshift accommodation in an abandoned workshop, the facility moved in 1985 together with the South Tyrolean Provincial Archives , to which a large part of the state archive was transferred in the course of the autonomy provisions, and the Provincial Library “Dr. Friedrich Teßmann ” a new building in the Gries-Quirein district .
