The South Tyrolean regional library “Dr. Friedrich Teßmann ” was established in Bolzano in 1982 and, with over 450,000 media units, is the largest scientific general library in South Tyrol. In its collecting activities, the regional library strives for completeness in regional literature, whereby publications from the area of historical Tyrol - the so-called Tyrolensia - are given special consideration. In addition, the state library mainly collects German and Ladin- language literature from all areas of knowledge (with the exception of children's and youth literature ). The "Teßmann" digital library - in cooperation with Europeana - makes historical newspaper stocks from the 19th and 20th centuries, Tyrol and graphics available electronically.

In addition to the function of a scientific information center for the promotion of research , professional and advanced training , the library - analogous to the library of the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum - sees itself as a regional documentation center that specifically builds up a regional history collection to preserve the cultural heritage . In addition, the state library serves as a communication center, as it functions as a place of learning and knowledge.

history

In 1957, the South Tyrolean regional historian and politician Friedrich Teßmann (1894–1958) donated his private library, which was predominantly from Tyrol, to the Austrian Academy of Sciences on the condition that the collection in Bolzano was made accessible to the public and expanded with relevant new publications . The donation was managed together with the study library of the South Tyrolean Cultural Institute in the House of Culture "Walther von der Vogelweide".

In 1982 the collection formed the basis of the South Tyrolean regional library “Dr. Friedrich Teßmann ”, which is located in the Gries district of Bolzano . Several bequests, such as those of the German Germanist Hermann Pongs , the physician Otto Rudl or the regional historian Franz Hieronymus Riedl , as well as donations have since expanded the holdings.

In 1992 the IT administration was introduced. The holdings have been listed in the union catalog of the Austrian regional libraries since 1999 and in the Karlsruhe virtual catalog since 2003 .

In 2008 the Teßmann library was rebuilt by the Bozen architect Christoph Mayr-Fingerle; The lending area was redesigned and the magazine area and the IT area were enlarged.
