The Gsieser Tal ( Italian Valle di Casies ) or simply Gsies is a side valley of the Puster Valley in South Tyrol , Italy .

In the interior of the valley is the municipality of Gsies . At the exit of the valley are the villages Taisten and Welsberg , fractions of the municipality Welsberg-Taisten .

The Gsieser Tal stretches for about 22 km. The catchment area of the Gsieser Bach (also called Pidigbach ), which flows into the Rienza at 1071  m , is 145 km².

Side valleys of the Gsieser valley are the larger Karbachtal, the small Pfoital and the Verselltal. In the west and north, mountain chains separate the Gsieser from Antholz , in the northeast from the Austrian Defereggental , in the east from the Austrian Villgratental , in the south from the Pustertal. High mountains are in the west of the Ochsenfelder (2609 m) and the Regelspitze (2775 m), in the north the Feldspitze (2837 m) and the Hochkreuz (2739 m), in between lies the Gsieser Törl , a 2205 m high saddle to the Defereggental. Riepenspitze (2774 m) and Heimwaldspitze (2755 m) rise to the east.

The predominant type of rock is old gneiss , some deposits of Antholz granite gneiss can also be found. The Gsieser Tal is traversed by a radon vein running northeast . The odorless and highly radioactive gas leaks from the ground in some places and often accumulates in the basements of older buildings. In the Gsies primary school, after children complained of headaches , a particularly high level of radon was found.
