The Gsieser Törl is a transition ( 2205  m above sea level ) from the rear Gsieser Valley in South Tyrol ( Italy ) over to the Defereggental in East Tyrol ( Austria ). Since the Treaty of Saint-Germain came into force in 1920, the border between Italy and Austria has run across the Gsieser Törl .

There are many old smuggler stories about the Gsieser Törl . In the 1920s and 1930s in particular, it was considered a much-used smuggler's route between Italy and Austria, as was the Jöcher between Gsieser Tal and Villgratental . At that time, but also into the 1970s, this remote crossing was subject to restrictive controls, especially by Italian customs officials. Although the crossing can only be reached after several hours of strenuous walking, it was used intensively by smugglers at the time, mostly at night.

A few meters below the Törl ridge are abandoned barracks on the Italian side, built directly on the rock face. The customs officers were housed in these primitive accommodations even during the winter months, at an altitude of around 2200 meters, difficult to access from the valley. For a long time, a wooden fence marked the state border across the entire width of the transition. There was nothing to be seen of this fence in September 2018. The customs hut, which is shown in a picture in this article, has collapsed and is only a pile of rubble.

A few years ago there were plans to expand the way to the Gsieser Törl on both sides as a cross-border road crossing. These plans were never realized, however, because the encroachment on the landscape would have been immense and would have been in no reasonable proportion to the benefit.

From the Gsieser Törl the summit of the Deferegger Pfannhorn ( 2820  m ) can be reached in around 2½ hours of walking. Only the last 180 meters in altitude, above the so-called melt pit to the summit of the Pfannhorn, are steep and require sure-footedness .

Ascent

South side

From St. Magdalena (church, 1398 m) in the Gsieser Tal , first into the Talschlusshütte (1465 m; there is also possible by car, parking); now left or straight on to the Rotmooshof, from there either on the road through the forest (marking no.49) or on the east-facing footpath, mostly through alpine pastures, to the Pidigalm and the Kradorfer Alm (bar, 1694 m). Now soon more steeply uphill further up the valley to the Oberbergalm (1975 m; bar) and over lush mountain meadows and past the headwaters of the Gsieser Bach up to the Gsieser Törl (from starting point 2½ hours).

North side

From the district of Maria Hilf near St. Jakob in Defereggen , via path no. 329 to the Lappachalm (1928 m), from there easy over alpine meadows, always along the Lappbach , up to the Gsieser Törl (from the starting point 2½ hours).
