The Thurnstein Castle is a castle in Thurnstein , in the municipality of Postmünster , Lower Bavaria .

It was built in the 13th century on a hill south of Postmünster and changed hands several times after it was built. At the end of the 17th century, the castle was built in its current form as a three-wing complex open to the south with three floors and two towers. In the east wing is the palace chapel “Maria Heimsuchung”, which experts call a masterpiece. The palace complex is located on the north side of the four-sided, very large palace courtyard, the buildings of which have been completely restored in recent years. The yard itself was redesigned and newly laid out in terms of gardening.

During the Second World War, the SS and the Bayreuth Gauleitung were quartered in Thurnstein Castle. Due to this fact, shortly before the end of the war in 1945, many Postmünsterers feared the site would be destroyed. The Gauleitung left the Thurnstein site on May 1, 1945 to save their lives from the approaching Americans. That same afternoon the first Allied tanks reached the place. As we learned later, the Americans would have shot at Thurnstein and Postmünster if they had known that the SS was quartered here.

Younger usage

In recent years the atmosphere of the palace complex was used socially in various ways. Music concerts, fire brigade festivals and film events are sometimes held there.
