The Wurmaulspitze ( 3022 m slm ), also called Engspitz by the locals , rises east of the innermost Valler Valley in the Fundres Mountains in South Tyrol . On the south side of the mountain, the mountain grass reaches up to 2,900 meters, which makes the summit look rather inconspicuous for its height. The somewhat unusual name of the Wurmaulspitze, which is already documented around 1600, is believed by some linguists to come from the Celtic "vernula", which means something like "small alder".
The easiest ascent of the summit, which is quite easy to climb, leads from the Almdorf Fane ( 1735 m ) first through the Schramme , a gorge of the Valler Bach, and further north over meadows up to the Brixner Hut ( 2344 m ). Now follow the narrower, marked trail first in a south-easterly direction, then in an easterly, later northerly direction over moderately steep, but when wet, not harmless grass slopes to the rocky summit of the Wurmaulspitze, with only a very short, secured rock passage to be mastered.
