location

The Grafenau holiday village was built in 1964 on the Schwaimberg on the outskirts of the town of Grafenau in the Bavarian Forest on an area of 27 hectares.

history

Due to the blockade of the western zones of Berlin (from June 24, 1948) the German Association of Cities founded the Berlin relief organization . This was intended to give Berlin children the opportunity to find relaxation in the rest of Germany under the motto “A place in the sun” .

In the beginning, the children were sent to host families and to existing holiday camps; from 1960 to 1965 the foundation then built its own holiday properties. On May 24, 1964, the Grafenau holiday village was opened by the wife of the then Federal President Wilhelmine Lübke. At the time, it was supposedly the largest and most modern holiday village in Europe. The construction cost DM 12 million including the procurement of land.

The Bayernpark Feriendörfer are particularly characterized by their 'family holidays' approach. The whole family should be given the opportunity to experience vacation together. The families were accommodated in 125 bungalows with 4-7 beds and 3-4 rooms, these were equipped with a fully equipped kitchen, other household items could be borrowed. The holiday village was equipped with a village shop, central washing machines, a library, an event hall and leisure and sports facilities. A staggered offer has been set up for childcare. There was a crèche (0–3 years), a kindergarten (3–6 years), a children's program (6–12 years) and a special offer for older children (from 12 years). Several times a week, family events were held in the event hall, at which the children and young people showed performances that were rehearsed during the day's program.

In the beginning, the holiday guests traveled by coach and later they traveled together with special trains from the Zoo station . For parents, and especially for the children, even the journey was part of the shared holiday experience.

In the mid-1980s, the number of holidaymakers in the holiday villages declined. The reasons for this were, on the one hand, generally falling travel prices and thus a relative increase in prices in the holiday villages and, on the other hand, the standard in the holiday village remained at a simple level. The Grafenau holiday village was subsequently better marketed and the houses were modernized.

Until 1998, the family holiday villages were reserved for “families with children from West Berlin”.

The sister villages

In addition to the Grafenau holiday village, the Berlin Relief Organization built other holiday villages under the Bayernpark Feriendörfer logo.
These are:

  • Bayernpark Feriendorf Lindenberg (Allgäu), opened in 1960 on the Nadenberg.
  • Bayernpark Feriendorf Eisenärzt (Upper Bavaria), opened in 1965
Built with 108 holiday homes each.

Operational structure

The 3 holiday villages were operated by Bayernpark Feriendörfer Nadenberg GmbH , based in Frankfurt am Main and an office in Berlin. The organizations AWO , Caritas , DRK , Diakonisches Werk , Stiftung Hilfswerk Berlin , Jewish Community Berlin and the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband were represented on the supervisory board of this company .

Development from 2007

At the end of 2006, the Grafenau holiday village was taken over by SARCON Ferienparks GmbH Hamburg, 70% of which is owned by the Dutch Roompot Group. Tourism marketing is carried out by SARCON Ferienparks GmbH Hamburg. Bayernpark Grafenau GmbH, Stadtlohn, was founded on December 5, 2006 to operate the holiday village. On May 11, 2007 it was published in the Federal Gazette that Bayernpark Feriendörfer Nadenberg GmbH has been dissolved. In the course of the change of ownership, some changes were made to the park: For example, each bungalow received a permanently installed television . A special innovation was the opening of a ski lift located directly at the park.

The Bayernpark was closed in December 2014 due to insufficient occupancy and declining visitor numbers.
