The South Tyrolean Rieder from Meransen (municipality of Mühlbach ) was 4th in the giant slalom at the Junior World Championships in 1995. He achieved through strong performances in the European Cup - in 1996/97 he was third in the giant slalom classification, the following season he was fourth in the Italian A-team and fixed assignments in the World Cup . Rieder had already made his World Cup debut in February 1996 and scored points for the first time just under a year later as 25th in Adelboden .

In February 1998 Rieder achieved a top result for the first time with rank 6 in the giant slalom of Yongpyong in South Korea , but in the two following seasons he was only able to qualify for a second round once. Things started to improve again from 2002, with Rieder finishing 15th in the giant slalom ranking in the 2002/03 season. In addition, the South Tyrolean was a member of the Italian team at the World Championships in St. Moritz, where he finished 15th in the giant slalom. The 2003/04 season turned out to be the best in Rieder's career. Right at the beginning he was fourth in Sölden and thus achieved his best career result. In the final accounts he landed on rank 11. In 2002/03 and 2003/04 Rieder even managed a few points in the Super-G .

Arnold Rieder had to endure various injuries during his career, which ultimately led to the end of his skiing career. In autumn 2006 he tore his Achilles tendon during training , which meant that he had to take a break for the entire season. In 2007 he fell in the first race of the new 2007/08 World Cup season and suffered a cruciate ligament rupture . As a result, Rieder decided to retire from professional skiing.
