Micurà de Rü

Micurà de Rü (alias Nikolaus Bacher ; * December 4, 1789 in Rü near St. Kassian , Abbey ; † March 29, 1847 in Wilten ) was a Ladin linguist .

Micurà de Rü was born as the youngest son of a family of four mountain farmers . He studied philosophy and theology , among others in Innsbruck , Trient and Salzburg . He was ordained a priest on August 28, 1814 in Salzburg. He spent his first years as a priest in various parishes in Austria . He worked for several years as a field chaplain and as an educator in a military boys' educational institute in Milan . For a short time, Micurà de Rü also held a teaching position for Italian at the University of Innsbruck .

In addition to the priesthood, he was particularly interested in his mother tongue, Ladin. In 1833 he was the first to write a Ladin grammar with the title An attempt at a German-Ladin language teaching - the first planning of a written language in all of the Dolomites . The basic idea of ​​this grammar is to create a common written language for all Ladins .

The Istitut Ladin "Micurà de Rü" in St. Martin in Thurn is named after him.
