Elvas is a fraction of Bressanone in South Tyrol , which lies in the Eisack Valley on the plateau bordered by Eisack and Rienz north of the city center. Elvas has around 270 inhabitants and is 820 meters above sea level. Thanks to its sunny location, the village is surrounded by orchards and grapevines and offers a view of the Brixner valley basin and the surrounding mountains. Numerous prehistoric finds in the village indicate an early settlement.

location

View of Elvas from the motorway rest area

The place Elvas is located above the central town of Brixen between the hills Schaiders, Guggenkofl, Vogeltenne and Pinazbühel. The high plateau, on which Elvas and the villages of Natz , Viums , Schabs , Raas , Aicha and Kranebitt are located, is between 800 and 930 meters above sea level.

geology

The high plateau is the remnant of an old valley floor , which was separated during the Ice Ages , around 16,000 years ago, by the erosion activity of the rivers Eisack and Rienz , and thus remained as a 4.5 km long and 2.5 km wide land island. The numerous round humps with their glacier ships, such as the Pinatzhügel, the Elvaser Kopf, the Walderer Bühel and the elongated Mooswald, but also the many granite boulders that are spread over the entire Brixen area, provide information about the activity of the Ice Age glaciers .

Surname

The word Elvas is derived from the Latin word "ulva" and means "marsh grass".

history

On the occasion of the consecration of the St. Peter and Paul Church in "Elfes", Elvas is first documented in records of the Augustinian canons of Neustift near Brixen from the year 1077.

Prehistoric and early historical finds

Cup stones

There are several cup stones around Elvas . The "Bildstein von Elvas" is located at the southern foot of the Pinatzkopf and is one of the richest image stones in the Alps . This rock is a block of stone in which several different bowls and numerous grooves are inscribed. On the left side of the rock there is an area that resembles a slide. Tradition has it that it is a so-called fertility slide. Another such slide is located on the "Kreuzplatte" and is also known by the locals as the "witch's slide". Researchers are still puzzling over the meaning and purpose of the cup stones.
