Natz ( Italian Naz ) is a village in South Tyrol and a fraction of the community Natz . Next to Schabs, Naz is the second capital of the municipality and is the seat of the original parish of the area.

Naz lies on a small plateau in the Eisack Valley, bordered by Eisack and Rienz, a few kilometers north of Brixen . The closest neighboring villages are Raas in the west and Viums in the north . Agriculturally, the plateau is primarily used for growing apples. In addition, tourism is an important industry. The village is characterized on the one hand by the apple orchards and on the other hand by the many hotels and inns. A close-knit network of hiking trails runs across the entire plateau.

NATO base

Since the end of the Second World War, Natz has been a base of the US military , where tactical nuclear weapons were stored in underground bunkers for the nuclear participation of NATO member Italy from 1967 to 1983 ( Site Rigel ). This facility was abandoned in 1991 and the 11th US Army Field Artillery Detachment withdrawn. The site was owned by the Italian state until 2011, which then transferred the area to the state of South Tyrol. In turn, at the beginning of 2020, the municipality of Natz-Schatz issued a 30-year usage permit. The community plans to turn the former NATO base into a recreational area.
