reception

In the print and online media, experts' reviews of the television series were often very critical and often negative. In the FAZ Feuilleton, for example, Stefan Niggemeier criticized the handling of clichés, which in his opinion was completely inflationary and completely oversubscribed.

"The ZDF series' Dr. Klein 'is one single misunderstanding that affects one. This is what happens when clichés are thought to be brave, subversive, and funny. [...] According to ZDF, 'Dr. Klein 'be a series that' tells about being different in a contemporary way - humorous, politically incorrect and only marginally ', and that failed in every respect, whatever is meant to mean' politically incorrect '. Being different is the focus and thwarting the possibly well-intentioned message that being different is just a form of normality. Real conflicts that can arise between a pubescent daughter and a short mother, for example, are resolved brutally: The fact that she actually doesn't want to introduce her mother to her new classmates changes the moment there is an accidental meeting and one of her friends points his finger at her and yells: 'A talking dwarf!' If the others are such idiots, it is of course easy not to be an idiot. "

Arno Frank at Spiegel online also criticized the fact that the series hardly differs from the other former series on this broadcasting slot, such as Der Landarzt and Forsthaus Falkenau , and thus only represents the usual.

"[...] 'Dr. Klein 'hardly differs [...] from all the foresters and country doctors who previously worked in the same place. It is the same unctuous wellness bath as always. Only the shampoo is a little more exciting. "

- Arno Frank in Spiegel online

Alexander Josefowicz from Hamburger Abendblatt remarked that the series wants to create an all too ideal world, but by creating depth of the characters it could become a show worth watching. However, Josefowicz also criticized the voice-over texts at the beginning and end of the episodes.

“[…] The concern of the production company and broadcaster to present otherness as a normal, positive part of everyday life is honorable. But at least in the first episodes, the series likes its reinterpretation of the ideal world, in which otherwise is automatically good and familiar is always bad. You won't find any gray tones. Potential is one of 'Dr. Klein 'nevertheless admit: If the characters get more depth, they define themselves less in the further course of the plot by their more or less obvious differences; may Dr. Little can also be beastly and receives Dr. A long chance in between to do a good deed, who knows: Then 'Dr. Small 'smoothly worth seeing. But only if the ZDF, in addition to the overly ostentatious do-gooders, also abolishes the unctuous voice-over texts in which Klein gossips in poetry album style about the "roles one plays in life" and about existence as a rollercoaster between drama and Comedy."

- Alexander Josefowicz in the Hamburger Abendblatt

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv praises the presentation of the medical level of the series, but also criticizes the linking of the narrative threads, which in his opinion did not run correctly in episode 1.

"This role is written for ChrisTine Urspruch: In the ZDF series" Dr. Small ”, the actress embodies a small pediatrician who has to assert herself against the prejudices of her colleagues at her new job. The stories combine the typical elements of a doctor series with family conflicts. The other characters also contribute to the plea for tolerance: One doctor is gay, another dark-skinned. With some verbal duels you involuntarily think of the Münster "crime scene". "
