Gebhard Luiz

Gebhard Luiz (born August 14, 1913 in Söflingen ; † July 29, 2013 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman .

Life

After studying from 1932 to 1936, he was ordained priest in 1937 by Bishop Joannes Baptista Sproll . Luiz was then vicar at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Stuttgart and was arrested there by the Gestapo for listening to hostile broadcasters on the charge of "decomposing the military strength of the German people" and then by the Stuttgart special court chaired by Hermann Cuhorst for one and a half years in prison sentenced. After the Nazi opponent, who was known to be an opponent of the Nazis, was initially supposed to serve the sentence in the Lingen-Papenburg moor camp , this sentence was converted to a prison sentence on the Hohenasperg .

Freed from prison, he visited Bishop Sproll in Krumbad , who dictated a pastoral letter for his diocese of Rottenburg . Stations in Riedlingen , Göppingen and Uhingen as well as Kirchbierlingen followed , before he finally came to Bad Schussenried as a chaplain for eight years in 1946 . There he was able to gain knowledge in depth psychology as a chaplain at the state psychiatric hospital , which predestined him for his subsequent activity as a prison chaplain. In 1954 he came to Schwäbisch Gmünd, where he became a prison guard at the Gotteszell prison for women and built an adjacent parish with a church, the Pius Church .

As a priest in the institution he tried to get various reliefs through, so the permission to smoke for prisoners of the JVA Schwäbisch Gmünd is among other things his merit. In 1971 Luiz became dean for the dean's office in Schwäbisch Gmünd for ten years , and he was also a scout pastor . He was a co-founder of the local Lions club .

He retired at the 70th jubilee at the age of 93 . He was buried at the Leonhard Cemetery in Gmünd with great sympathy .

In July 2014 a path in Schwäbisch Gmünd was named Pfarrer-Luiz-Weg in his honor .
