Head nurse

Head nurse is the term used in Austria for the head of the nursing service in an institution. Men in the relevant function are head carers . In Austria, the underlying job title is qualified health and nurse . Building on this, the qualification as head nurse or head nurse can be achieved with the corresponding further training.

In Germany, the designation corresponding to the head nurse is specialist for managerial tasks in nursing , but the common nursing management is PDL . In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, this function corresponds to the senior  nurse .

The managers of individual wards in hospitals who report to the head nurse are ward nurses or ward nurses (in Germany a specialist in managing a functional unit ). Corresponding positions also exist in other departments, so the surgical site (Chief scrub nurse respectively. Nurses), the intensive care (ICU) and other specialized units (children, psychiatric department, etc..), The hospital pharmacy , and also in training (senior teaching nurse or carers).

For a long time, the designation head nurse has been common in Germany for the overall responsible position in the nursing service .
