Mausoleum of Archduke Johann

The mausoleum of Archduke Johann in Schenna near Meran is an excellent example of neo-Gothic architecture in today's South Tyrol . The mausoleum was built as a chapel dedicated to John the Baptist in the cemetery next to the parish church of the Assumption of Mary and near Schenna Castle . The building's architect was Moritz Wappler , and it was consecrated in 1869.

Building description

Altar of the upper church and window with namesake of the family

The mausoleum, mainly made of granite and sandstone blocks, has the shape of a high Gothic choir . There is an outside staircase in front of the entrance. The south facade is designed with a rose window , pinnacles and a roof turret. The angel above the rose and the blessing Christ in the tympanum of the portal are works by Franz Xaver Pendl . The side walls are broken open by slender pointed arch windows. The interior is closed off at the top by ribbed vaults and fan vaults. The central window in the apex of the choir comes from Innsbruck and shows the name of the family, the hll. Francis , John the Baptist and Anna . A neo-Gothic tabernacle altar stands in front of it .

There is an accessible crypt in the basement . Here are Archduke Johann , his wife Anna Plochl , and their son and clients of the building Franz von Meran buried. The simple marble altar with crucifix and the sarcophagus are also works by Pendl.

Replica

Inspired by the appearance of the mausoleum, Ulrich von Behr-Negendank had a replica of the Berlin Hase student Wilhelm Walter built near his castle in Semlow in 1880 , which was completed in 1881 and was the location of the Semlower Marienkrönung altar until 1973 .
