Gerhard Trumler

Gerhard Trumler (born December 5, 1937 in Vienna ) is an Austrian photographer .

Trumler spent his childhood in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel until 1946, and in 1950 he got his first camera. After graduating from high school in 1956, after interrupting his law studies in 1957, he initially worked as a dispatcher for the Austrian Federal Railways and later as an air traffic controller . He ended this activity in order to devote himself to studying photography in Munich, which he completed in Vienna in 1966. In 1967 he trained as a banker, accompanied by the first photo work for the Central Savings Bank of the Municipality of Vienna .

In 1969 Trumler set up his own photo studio, which was followed by orders for advertising, the record and computer industry and banks. In 1970 he was awarded the State Prize for Advertising. Between 1969 and 1975 he also documented the political careers of Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky and Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger . He photographs for numerous international publications such as Smithsonian , Geo , Life , Die Zeit , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and numerous others.

In 1978 he published his first photo book "Klösterreich" on monasteries in Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland. Around 150 worldwide publications and over 200 portfolios on cultural and socially critical topics followed. Numerous works have received awards. Among other things, the photographer has been awarded the Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria , the Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Province of Lower Austria and the Albert Schweitzer Medal for European cultural journalism . He has also been a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus since 1987 , and in 1988 he was awarded the title of Professor.

Trumler photographs with Leica and Hasselblad cameras. His distinctive stylistic devices include black and white photography with which he likes to portray inconspicuous details in old rural culture but also in urban surroundings. He lives with his family in Vienna and in Fraberg near Langschlag in the Waldviertel, where he organizes photo workshops in the Nordwald Academy that he founded.
