Joseph Bruchac

Joseph Bruchac (* 16th October 1942 in Saratoga Springs , New York ) is an Indian - American writer and member of the Abenaki -Stammesgruppe. In addition to his publications as a poet and novelist, Bruchac writes children's books and works as an editor and publisher of collections of contemporary Indian-American authors. Bruchac is a member of the Poetry Society of America and the PEN Club.

Life

Bruchac studied literature at Cornell University , received his MA from Syracuse University and wrote his Ph.D. dissertation in comparative literature at the Union Institute in Cincinnati in 1975 . On behalf of Skidmore College , he directed a college program in a maximum security prison for eight years.

With his wife, Carol, he founded the Greenfield Review Literary Center , a nonprofit in Greenfield Center , New York, and the publisher The Greenfield Review Press .

Bruchac published over 70 books; his poems and short stories have appeared in over 500 publications. His anthology Breaking Silence won the American Book Award in 1984. He also received a scholarship from the New York State Arts Council in 1972 , later a Writing Fellowship for Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts , the Cherokee Nation Prose Award , the Knickerbocker Award , the Hope S. Dean Award for Notable Achievement in Children's Literature and im In 1998 two awards from the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers (Writer of the Year and Storyteller of the Year Award). In 1999 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas .
