Poetry Society of America
The Poetry Society of America is an American literary society . It was founded in 1910 in New York City by poets, literary scholars and publishers with the aim of promoting the development and understanding of poetry.
For this purpose, the society awards grants, organizes events and awards literary prizes .
Poetry in Motion
In collaboration with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority , the Poetry Society of America has been placing poetry on public transport in the country since 1992. From the Poetry in Motion program mentioned several publications emerged.
Literary prizes
The Poetry Society of America awards the following literary prizes. (Prizes 1 through 5 can only be received by members.)
- The Writer Magazine / Emily Dickinson Award: For a poem inspired by Emily Dickinson . Endowed with $ 250.
- Cecil Hemley Memorial Award: For a poem on a philosophical or epistemological subject. Endowed with $ 500.
- Lyric Poetry Award: For a poem. Endowed with $ 500.
- Lucille Medwick Memorial Award: For a poem on a humanitarian issue. Endowed with $ 500.
- Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award: For ongoing work on a poem or verse drama . Endowed with $ 1000.
- Louise Louis / Emily F. Bourne Student Award: For an unpublished poem by a student in the United States. Endowed with $ 250.
- George Bogin Memorial Award: For a collection of linguistically original poems. Endowed with $ 500.
- Robert H. Winner Memorial Award: For a poem by an author over 40 years old. Endowed with $ 2500.
- Louis Hammer Memorial Award: For a surrealist poem. Endowed with $ 250.
- Norma Farber First Book Award : For a first collection of poetry by an American author. Endowed with $ 500.
- William Carlos Williams Award : For a poetry collection by an author in the United States. Endowed with $ 500 to $ 1000.
- Frost Medal : For the life's work of a poet. Endowed with $ 2500.
- Shelley Memorial Award : For an American poet. Endowed with $ 6,000 to $ 9,000.
