American Book Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Book Award is an American book award for contemporary literature (including academic and non-fiction books , etc.) regardless of genre. It has been awarded annually to several prize winners since 1980, as well as one prize winner for the life's work. At the suggestion of the Afro-American author Ishmael Reed, the prize is donated by the Before Columbus Foundation , founded in 1976 , and sees itself as an award by authors for authors. The foundation's name alludes to the ethnic minorities who were denied the right to read in the early days of the United States. The foundation of the award also expressed criticism of the previously extremely low representation of authors from minorities at the awarding of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award . Accordingly, great importance is attached to intercultural aspects in the presentation of the American Book Award .
