Akhuna, the lead wolf, lives together with her companion Palo Kan, the old wolves Wuk and Wok, their three young wolves Imiak, Star Sister, Schiriki and their two pups Itsi and To peacefully in the valley of the whispering winds according to Waka, the law. But one day the dreaded pack Countless comes with its leader Shogar Kan into their valley, which has set out to subdue all wolf packs. You will be given the choice to either fight or join the pack. Akhuna and Palo Kan decide, since they are already old and have to go to Kaam (= the land after death) anyway, to face Shogar Kan and go to Kaam. Shogar Kan, towering over everyone, kills them, the others submit. But the wolves - especially the shy Shiriki - do not feel comfortable in this new, unnatural life. Imiak and Schiriki flee after an argument, star sister follows them soon after. What they cannot know: the jay Schak, an old friend, has noticed that Akhuna was still living weakly and is nursing them again. Akhuna moves up the mountain to see Hota, the old wise bear who keeps her company. When Schak watches Schiriki, Star Sister and Imiak flee, he tells Akhuna, who sends him out to help the rest of the pack escape and to lead them to the three young wolves. They succeed. To be reunited and to know that Akhuna is alive gives them courage, which they also need on the long way to the land not yet conquered by Shogar Kan. At the end of this long journey, however, they also find friends who are not yet under the rule of Shogar Kan. After a number of years they return to their devastated valley in a new configuration and Schiriki finally surrenders to Shogar Kan. In a final dispute he can persuade him to renounce his sole rule and let Waka, the law, return to the wolves.

characters

Ahkuna

The lead wolf of the pack that plays the main role. Before he was killed, her mate was Palo Kan. In the fight with Shogar Kan, Ahkuna is seriously injured, but is nursed back up by Schak. Then she moves with him to the mountain of Hota, the old bear. There she sinks deeper and deeper into dreams from her past and rarely reaches clear consciousness. When it becomes clear at the end of the book that Shogar Kan has been defeated, she falls asleep peacefully.

Palo Kan

Before he was killed by Shogar Kan, he was the lead wolf and the strongest wolf in the pack that played the main role. His mate was Ahkuna until his death. She affectionately calls him "father of my puppies".

Wuk and wok

Two wolves who were born a long time ago in a pack but never left it. They are so similar that they have been given similar-sounding names. Both are experienced hunters and indispensable for the pack. Your main task is to raise and train the puppies. Both have no mate and willingly let the much younger Imiak take over the pack.

Mahana

A she-wolf who got into the pack before the beginning of the book. She later joins Shogar Kan and becomes the companion of Tika Kan, the leader of the neighboring pack. From that moment on, she never misses an opportunity to harass her former pack. She later vows to kill Imiak one day. She remains a loyal follower of Shogar Kan until her death and eventually dies, almost insane from hunger, by drowning herself in a river.

Imiak

At the beginning of the book a young wolf from Ahkuna and Palo Kan and brother of Schiriki and star sister. As the adventure progresses, he becomes the leader of the pack. With "Imiak Kan" (= the honorary title for lead wolves) he is only addressed at the end of the story. Under the rule of Shogar Kan, he tells the ancient story of Waka, the law, and is then ostracized along with Shiriki. The others follow them. During the pack's stay in the sand country, he gets a companion who later moves with him and becomes his lead wolf.

Shiriki

A young wolf from Ahkuna and Palo Kan and brother of Imiak and star sister. He is always the thoughtful one and stands up to three times during the Shogar Kan adventure. In the course of the adventure he learns to talk to Waka and once brings back the shak who was believed to be dead from Kaam. Later it is he who drives out Shogar Kan. He never has a mate.

Star sister

Sister of Shiriki and Imiak. Her light fur glows at night, which is why Shiriki named her "star sister". She is Shiriki's closest confidante and stays with him for life, although she could have left and joined another pack. She loves her skinny brother and gives him comfort.

Itsi and To

Itsi and To are the pups in the pack. They particularly suffer from Shogar Kan because they are still young and do not understand what is happening around them. They also have to cope with the death of their father. They later become friends with the Hogala puppies Skruff and Min, who in the end also become their companions.

Shak

Schak is a jay, a multicolored winged man who made friends with Ahkuna as a young bird. His jokes and his nagging cheer up the wolves and pass the time for them. He is Ahkuna's loyal friend, he saves her from death and accompanies her to Hota on the mountain. She later sends him off to lead her pack away from Shogar Kan. He is the most loyal friend of the valley wolves.

Adsini

A petite she-wolf from the Hogala. She is always happy, saves the wolves from dying of thirst in the scorching desert sun and later becomes Imiak's companion. She leaves her beloved Hogala and her clan with the wolves from the valley and will later become the mother of Imiak's puppies.

Chocolate Kan

A wolf from the north who is obsessed with the idea of grouping all packs of wolves in the world into one "pack of countless" dominating everything and thus becoming the "leader of all leaders". He kills Palo Kan in the fight for rule in the pack and later expels Imiak and Schiriki from his pack after Shiriki has told the old story of Waka, the law. After the pack returns from the valley, it is defeated by Shiriki in a final battle. Shortly thereafter, Shogar Kan died in the rock fall that devastated the entire valley.
