Miss Read

Miss Read MBE (born April 17, 1913 in South Norwood , near London ; † April 7, 2012 , real name: Dora Jessie Saint , née Shafe ) was an English writer . The pseudonym "Miss Read" is based on her mother's maiden name.

Life

Read was a teacher by profession. After World War II, she began writing, first for the satirical magazine Punch and other magazines, and later for the BBC . In 1940 she married the late former headmaster Douglas Edward John Saint. The marriage produced a daughter, Jill. Since 1998 she has been a member of the Order of the British Empire for her service in British literature. Dora Saint lived in a small Berkshire village and retired from being a writer in 1996.
