Wilfried Zeller-Cell Mountain

Wilfried Zeller-Nahrungsmittelberg (born January 28, 1910 in Vienna ; † April 3, 1989 there ) was an Austrian book illustrator and author .

After a difficult youth, Wilfried attended the arts and crafts school in Vienna. He went to Berlin in 1930, lived there as a rapid draftsman and returned to Vienna in 1933 as a freelance artist.

In 1938 he was briefly arrested and then refused entry into the Reich Chamber of Culture . This amounted to a professional ban as an artist. He was then a truck driver and car dealer, after which he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a driver in 1939 .

He was seriously wounded in 1943 and subsequently discharged from military service in 1944. He then completed a course at the University of Applied Arts and now lived as a freelance artist.

He created drawings and watercolors and became known for book illustrations. He illustrated more than 400 works, including books by Kurt Tucholsky and Erich Kästner . For the Viennese author Jörg Mauthe he illustrated the book Der Gelernte Wiener , published in 1961 .

On April 30, 1986, Zeller -zellenberg received the Gold Medal of Honor from City Councilor for Culture Franz Mrkvicka in the Vienna City Hall.

Zeller-Zellberg belonged to the artists' association Der Kreis , which existed from 1946 to 1980 and advocated tolerance towards all modern styles. The last president was Franz Zadrazil . Zeller has been a member of the Austrian PEN Club since 1973 .

In autumn 2016, 115 entries were made in the electronic catalog of the Austrian National Library , including works illustrated by him with texts by Eva Bakos , Franz Karl Ginzkey , Helmut Leiter , Johann Nestroy , Käthe Recheis , Johannes Mario Simmel , Max Stebich , Mark Twain , Josef Weinträger and Renate Welsh .

In the Austrian society film drama Moos auf den Steinen from 1968 by Georg Lhotsky , he played the role of the old baron. The film, which at the time was regarded as the central work of a new Austrian film, is based on the novel of the same name by Gerhard Fritsch , who was also involved in the script.

Zeller-Zellberg was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in an honorary grave .
