Rick Riordan Presents

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rick Riordan Presents is an imprint from Disney Hyperion . Founded by the writer Rick Riordan , it publishes books for young people inspired by mythological subjects. The aim is to focus on legends and myths, the reception of which is underrepresented in (US-American) literature. It is crucial that members of the respective culture write the stories.

Story and concept

The writer Rick Riordan, who became famous through the youth book series Percy Jackson , reports that he has been asked many times whether he will deal with the mythologies of other cultures after the success of his youth books, which are inspired by Greek , Roman , Egyptian and Nordic mythology . However, he is of the opinion that he himself is not qualified to write about these materials - this is due to the members of the cultures from which the legends and myths sprang. He has therefore decided to create a platform on which members of minority cultures that are underrepresented in the USA can tell their own cultural heritage in fantastic stories. He wanted to use his level of awareness in order to create a broad audience for less noticed authors. Stephanie Owens Lurie, Riordan's editor, heads the segment. Riordan acts as a kind of curator.

In contrast to Riordan's own novels, the books published under Rick Riordan Presents do not take place in the universe of Percy Jackson, but rather in independent worlds. As of 2018, the first three books to be published are Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi , which deals with Indian mythology , The Storm Runner by JC Cervantes , which is inspired by the mythology of the Maya and Aztecs , and Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee , based on Korean mythology . This was followed by novels by Carlos Hernandez with Cuban and Tehlor Kay Mejia with Mexican myths as well as by Kwame Mbalia with African and Afro-American narrative traditions and Rebecca Roanhorse with myths of the Navajo . Further books by Sarwat Chadda on the mythology of Mesopotamia and by Graci Kim on Korean mythology have been announced.

So far the books have only been published in English. The Ravensburger Publishing has announced the summer of 2020, the number of JC Cervantes in German translation as Zane against the gods bring out. The first volume is to appear under the title Sturmläufer ( ISBN 978-3-473-40194-9 ).
