Rebecca Roanhorse (born 1971 in Conway , Arkansas ) is an American writer. She is known as a writer of science fiction and fantasy . Her short story Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™ won the Hugo and Nebula Awards in 2018 .

Life

Roanhorses ancestors are both Ohkay Owingeh, a branch of Pueblo culture , and African American . She grew up in Fort Worth , Texas , studied Religious Studies at Yale University , received a Masters in Theology from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and a PhD in Law from the University of New Mexico School of Law , where she focused on federal law for Indian specialized.

She participated in the Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation's authoring workshop in 2015 and published her first story Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™ in Apex Magazine in 2017 . In addition to the awards for best short story at the Hugo and Nebula Awards, the story was nominated for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and a finalist in the World Fantasy Award .

Her first novel Trail of Lightning , published in 2018, is also the first volume of the novel tetralogy The Sixth World , the second volume of which, Storm of Locusts, was published in 2019. A German translation of the first volume has been published under the title Das Awache Land - Jägerin des Sturms . The Sixth World takes place in a dystopian world that has been changed by the climate catastrophe and rising sea levels, but in which the world of the Indians is experiencing a new beginning and in Dinétah, the former Navajo reservation , the gods and monsters of Indian myths are awakening to real life. Above all, the mythical monsters cause problems and the task of the protagonist Maggie Hoskie is to get them out of the way.

Her novel Race to the Sun , published by Rick Riordan Presents in 2020 , is about two siblings from New Mexico who, with the support of characters from the mythology of the Navajo adventures, exist. It made it to number 5 on the New York Times bestseller list for children's and youth literature in February 2020 .

Roanhorse lives in Santa Fe , New Mexico with her husband and daughter .
