Yoon Ha Lee (born on 26. January 1979 in Houston , Texas ) is a Korean-American author of science fiction and fantasy , best known for his space opera - novels The Machineries of Empire .

Life

Lee's father was an army doctor. In his youth, the family lived alternately in Texas and South Korea . Lee attended the English-language Foreign School in Seoul and studied mathematics at Cornell University , where he received his bachelor's degree, and at Stanford , where Lee graduated with a master's degree in mathematical education. He then worked as an analyst in a market consulting firm for energy suppliers , as a web designer and taught mathematics.

Lee is a trans man and identifies as queer . He lives in Louisiana with his husband and daughter .

His first science fiction story, The Hundredth Question , appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1999 . By 2018 Lee had published over 60 short stories, a selection of 16 short stories appeared in the Conservation of Shadows collection in 2013 . 2016 Lee's first novel Ninefox Gambit , the first band of military science fiction - the trilogy The Machineries of Empire . It is about an endless war that hexarchy is waging against a movement of dissidents in the distant future. The weapons of this war appear magical but are based on the manipulation of the mathematical foundations of reality. Kel Cheris, a young, mathematically gifted soldier, is given the task of absorbing the ghost of a dead, once insane general in order to take a strategically important fortress, in which she runs the risk of going insane herself if her calculations include it Mistakes made.

At the suggestion of publishing imprint Rick Riordan Presents , Lee wrote his first youth book, Dragon Pearl . It was released in January 2019 and is described as a science fiction adventure novel based on Korean mythology . It reached 2nd place on the New York Times bestseller list for children's and young adult literature.

Awards

Lee's works have been nominated many times for SF awards, including three times for the Hugo Award , twice for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and once each for the Nebula , World Fantasy and Arthur C. Clarke Awards . In 2017, Ninefox Gambit was recognized as a debut novel at the Locus Awards .
