The Karakida Station ( Jap. 唐木田駅 , Karakida-eki ) is a station on the Japanese island of Honshu . It is operated by the Odakyū Dentetsu railway company and is located in Tokyo Prefecture in the Tama City area . The station opens up part of the planned city of Tama New Town .

Karakida is a terminus at the western end of the 10.6-kilometer Odakyū Tama Line of the Odakyū Dentetsu railway company , which branches off the Odakyū Odawara Line in Shin-Yurigaoka . Local and express trains run from Karakida to Shinjuku in central Tokyo (almost all without changing trains). Six to nine trains per hour are offered on weekdays during the day, ten to twelve during rush hour . At the bus stops around the station, five lines of the companies Keiō Bus Minami and Tama City Minibus stop .
The station is on the border of the Nakazawa and Karakida districts. It is oriented from north to south and has four tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on a central platform and on a side platform , both of which are covered. An operating track extends on the west side. The over southern end of the complex spans reception building in the form of a rider station . The tracks of the station merge into a storage facility with 15 tracks, which is located immediately south of it.
In the 2018 fiscal year, an average of 17,544 passengers used the station every day.

history
Since 1975 the Odakyū Tama Line extended to the Tama-Center station in the center of Tama New Town . The line should have been built in the direction of Sagamihara , but the oil crisis led to a sharp drop in demand for new apartments. For this reason, the western parts of this planned city received a less dense development than originally planned. Twelve years later, the Odakyū Dentetsu decided to extend the Tama line at least one and a half kilometers to Karakida in order to develop a new district and to build an additional parking facility . Construction work began in December 1987. Since the site for the parking facility was in hilly terrain, it had to be dug up to 25 meters deep. Around 760,000 cubic meters of earth were removed and 329 pillars were driven into the ground at a depth of 15 meters to serve as retaining walls. The station opened on March 27, 1990.
The cities of Machida and Sagamihara are striving to continue building the Tama Line and adopted a corresponding memorandum in May 2014. It is scheduled to open by 2027, when the Chūō-Shinkansen maglev will go into operation. The tracks are already aligned so that an extension would be possible without any major problems. However, there are concerns that the demand would not be high enough to warrant government funding.
