The Kane Chronicles - The Red Pyramid (Original title: The Red Pyramid. The Kane Chronicles ) is a fantasy novel by the American youth author Rick Riordan . It is the first book in the series The Kane Chronicles and was published in 2010; the German translation by Claudia Max was published by Carlsen Verlag in 2012 . The main characters Sadie and Carter Kane are in the foreground of the book.

The story begins with a private museum visit in London by Sadie, Carter, two siblings who have been separated from one another since the death of their mother, and their father Julius Kane. During this visit, her father freed five ancient Egyptian gods , namely Horus , Osiris , Isis , Seth and Nephthys , from the rosetta stone . The spirit of Osiris settles in the father, who is shortly afterwards killed by Seth. Isis settles in Sadie and Horus in Carter without the siblings knowing. Nephthys settles in an observer of the house of life . The siblings pass out and are brought home by the police. There they are expelled from the country because of a terrorist attack allegedly carried out by their father and brought to Brooklyn by their previously unknown uncle Amos . They learn that Amos got the police to evict them from the country. They also learn that they are descendants of Egyptian pharaohs and that they are also magically gifted. Using the children's stories and dreams, Amos reconstructs what happened. He finds out that Seth wants to take control and that humanity will suffer as a result. He embarks on a journey on which he is later captured by Seth.

During his absence, his villa, where Sadie and Carter are, is attacked and Sadie's cat is transformed into the goddess Bastet, who protects her. Nevertheless they have to flee. On their escape they meet the magician Nephtys went to. This brings Sadie and Carter into the so-called life house. Bastet is believed dead. In the house of life, magicians work who try to control the gods and keep them prisoner because they consider them to be evil.

Sadie meets the chief reading priest, Iskander, who now, like Carter and Sadie, believes that the gods are of good nature. But when Iskander dies and a new magician takes his place, Sadie and Carter have to flee through a portal. Later they meet Bastet, who was believed to be dead, and learn that they are guest bodies for the gods Horus and Isis.

Together with the help of the magic of the gods, the two children have many adventures. Eventually they meet their uncle Amos, who is obsessed with Seth, which the two siblings do not yet know. With the help of Zia Rashid, Nephthy's host, they penetrate a pyramid built by Seth. This is his host body, and when it is completed, a great source of power for him with which no one could stand in his way.

In a fight between Horus / Carter and Isis / Sadie, who actually got into harmony with the gods, with Seth, he is defeated with the help of a magic formula and his secret name. It turns out that, without knowing it , he fought for Apophis , who tried to break out of his prison. When Seth takes an oath, the Kane siblings let him go. During the fight, Zia Rashid dies and it is revealed that she is just a shabti . The host body of Nephthys has been hidden from Iskander from his death. Due to the fight with Seth, the house of life stops the search for the Kanes and Uncle Amos goes to Egypt to cure his possessed time.

Sadie and Carter realize that the power of the gods is addicting and give up on it. Then they go looking for more children with magical abilities who don't know about them. Horus is crowned pharaoh of the gods.
