Emma Thompson , Ray Winstone and Ashley Jensen can also be seen in other roles . The plot of the film is based on the novel Fear and Terror in the Hairdressing Salon by Douglas Lindsay .

action

The film is set in Glasgow and revolves around the 50-year-old Barney Thomson, who has led a boring life for 20 years and works as a hairdresser at Henderson's Barbers . Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Holdall inspects a number of body parts that are being sent through the city. Due to a lack of progress, the case is assigned to Detective Inspector June Robertson. Manager Wullie Henderson, son of Barney's friend James Henderson, prepares to fire Barney over his pessimistic outbursts that are negatively affecting the business. Barney desperately pleads with Wullie not to fire him, leading to a scramble in which Barney accidentally stabs his boss in the chest with small scissors. The panicked Barney packs the body in a sack and puts it in the trunk of his car, which his friend Charlie notices. Holdall questions Thomson, who denies having any knowledge of Wullie's habits or whereabouts. Holdall then clings to Barney's heels. He asks his mother Cemolina for help and hides the body with her. Later, Barney is horrified to discover that his mother chopped up the body, shrink-wrapped, labeled and stored the parts in the freezer. After a slip by Charlie, Barney's younger colleague Chris Roberts begins to suspect him, whereupon Barney confesses that there has been an accident. When Chris tries to attack him, a frightened Barney hits him in the chest with a broomstick and accidentally kills him too. As a result, Barney also brings Chris' body to Cemolina. However, when he takes Wullie's remains out of the freezer, he notices an extra hand in it, along with a notebook with addresses of the various locations where the killer's body parts were sent. He also finds out that his mother has prostituted herself for younger men. He later breaks into Chris' apartment to place Wullie's remains and incriminate him. However, Barney realizes that the freezer is too small for the body. When Holdall and his partner show up, Barney has to flee and leaves the body parts behind. When he confronts his mother, he discovers that she is the killer and that she killed their dates and shipped their remains. She reveals that Barney's father left her but didn't go far and never contacted Barney. After cruelly mocking Barney, she dies of a heart attack (or possibly a stroke) from overexertion. Barney sinks Chris' body in Loch Lubnaig and angrily chokes Charlie when he suspects that he knows something about Chris, although he leaves afterwards. The next day, James Henderson makes Barney a hairdresser, but he is called in the middle of the forest. There both police duos appear and in a shooting all but Barney are killed. Holdall accuses Barney, but Barney reveals the facts, although Holdall dies before he hears anything. After his reputation is restored, Barney becomes a local legend as he is the only survivor.

background

The film was shot in Glasgow. It premiered on June 17, 2015 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival ; in Germany, the comedy was released directly on DVD on May 19, 2016.

criticism

Cinema said the story of the "battered, depressed barber" was reminiscent of Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd in "its crankiness and absurdity" mixed with a dash of Wes Anderson's "ludicrous family portrait" The Royal Tenenbaums . The film does not reinvent the genre “from scratch”, but entertains “until the end”. In addition to the “atmospheric images”, the “outstanding” actors would also contribute. Emma Thompson in particular, who put the “icing on the cake” of the film “in an unusual look under bright make-up, gold jewelry and fur coat”, was highlighted. The plot also has "one or the other surprise" ready.

The film service saw a "[b] rutal-black comedy with borrowings from the films of Tarantino and the Coen brothers, but only in some places achieved the balance between macabre events and absurd exaggeration". The “film, which is also inconsistent in terms of performance”, is getting stuck.

Awards

Emma Thompson won a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actress in 2015 and an Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Comedy in 2016 . Robert Carlyle received an Audience Award that same year .
