Nil by Mouth is a British drama from 1997 and the first work of actor Gary Oldman as a director and writer. The film was produced by Douglas Urbanski and Gary Oldman.

Nil by Mouth shows the life of an underclass family in social housing in South East London. In addition to Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke , Gary Oldman's sister Laila Morse also plays a leading role.

The title Nil by Mouth is the English name for sobriety in the sense of food abstinence .

Nil by Mouth premiered on May 8, 1997 at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it was nominated for the Palme d' Or and Kathy Burke was awarded the Acting Prize for her interpretation of Valerie . He subsequently won many other awards, including two BAFTA Awards and three awards at the British Independent Film Awards .

The official release date was October 10, 1997 in Great Britain (USA: February 6, 1998). The film was not shown in cinemas in Germany and has only been released as a VHS video in England so far.

Because of its realistic and drastic depiction of domestic violence and excessive drug use and because of its explicit language, the film was not approved for young people or was only given restricted approval in many countries.
