Tod Slaughter (born March 19, 1885 in Newcastle , † February 19, 1956 in Derby ) was an English actor who was known for his particularly macabre portrayals in films.

Life

He was born under the name Norman Carter Slaughter as the oldest of 12 children in Newcastle upon Tyne in Northumberland . In 1905 he began his stage career in West Hartlepool . In 1913 he worked in the Hippodrome Theaters in Richmond and Croydon . During World War I he served in the Royal Flying Corps , after which he continued his acting career and returned to the stage.

Slaughter initially played very different characters, but increasingly developed into the actor of the villain, especially during his time as a film actor. His first film, which was decisive for his further career, was Maria Marten . He then played in a number of melodramatic films. His less dark roles included his appearances in the films Song of the Road and Darby and Joan . In Sexton Blake and the Hooded Terror , however, he played the head of an international gang of super villains. Slaughter was particularly convincing through the portrayal of Sweeney Todd in the film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street , this theme was filmed several times, including in 2007 with Johnny Depp in the role of the barber.
