Siam - Land and People (AKA Siam ) is an American documentary - short film by Ralph Wright from 1954 with the producer Walt Disney in 1955 for an Oscar nominee.
content
The viewer is informed that Siam is located in the largest and most densely populated continent on our globe, and that most of the land area is often flooded, as the country is one of the rainiest regions in the world. However, the moist earth has the advantage that the rice grows and thrives in the fields, but it is necessary to protect the tender seedlings from the tropical sun. It is mainly women who subsequently polish the rice.
Temples where believers make their offerings play an important role in the life of the Thai people . Meditation plays an important role in Siam, as does the study of the ancient teachings, which in turn contrasts with the enthusiasm for technology. Not only the impressive statues, but also the self-made parasols show the touch of beauty that is important to the Siamese. The hospitality of the people, which is characterized by a great self-image, is praised.
Reference is made to the coconut , which, along with rice, plays a major role in the food chain and has long been typical in the pioneers' menu. In addition, the coconut fibers, which can be spun into yarn, are an important raw material.
In the hottest time of the year, cooling is a problem that should not be underestimated. Encounters with elephants, which play a major role in men's everyday work, are also not left out. Sammy, a Siamese cat who is lovingly cared for after a grueling fight with another cat, lives in the family that is accompanied on their boat.
Production, publication
It is a production by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by the Buena Vista Film Distribution Company . Joshua Meador and Art Riley were responsible for the animated effects, Ub Iwerks for the special effects and CO Slyfield for the sound. Erwin Verity acted as production manager.
The film is part of Walt Disney's "People and Places" film series , which was produced between 1953 and 1960 and which produced 17 films. It is the second film in the series after The Alaskan Eskimo .
Siam premiered in the United States on December 24, 1954. The following year it was published in the following countries: Sweden, United Kingdom, Denmark and Belgium. In the Federal Republic of Germany the film was presented under the title Siam - Land und Menschen in June 1955 at the Berlin International Film Festival .
background
On June 24, 1939, the country name Siam was changed to Thailand . The reason given was that only foreigners had used the name Siam. After the dictator Plaek Phibunsongkhram , to whom the change is based, had been ousted , the name was changed back to Siam with the new constitution of 1946, but this was changed again after the nationalist field marshal's second takeover in 1949, who in turn enforced the name Thailand. However, some intellectuals and historians still prefer the term Siam.
