Joshua Meador

Joshua Meador (March 12, 1911 in Greenwood , Mississippi , † August 24, 1965 in Mendocino , California ) was an American animator , special effects artist and painter . He received in 1955 for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects .

Life

When he was seven, his family moved from Greenwood to Columbus after his father, who worked on the railroad, was transferred there. He married his childhood sweetheart Libby in 1931. In the same year he began to study at the Art Institute of Chicago . After completing his studies in 1935, he and his wife moved to California, where he worked at Disney Studios from 1936 . Shortly afterwards he took over the effects department, which at the time consisted of only three employees. In 1937 he animated the scene in the cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in which the witch climbs the mountain in a storm. His department, which had grown to 64 employees by 1940, also animated the classic film Fantasia .

In the next few years, films such as Bambi , Cinderella and Make Mine Music followed , for which he worked as a director, among other things. In 1954 he and his department were responsible for the special effects in the feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . For this work he and John Hench received the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects . He left Disney in 1960 to have more time painting. He died of heart failure in the summer of 1965.

His son Philip, called Phil, also worked at the Disney studios in the special effects division.
