In the Land of the Bears is an American short film directed by James Algar in 1953.

action

The land of bears has become smaller and smaller since the colonization of America, and in the 20th century it is mostly concentrated in the Rocky Mountains area . In winter, however, there is not much to see of the bear, as it hibernates and breaks down the layer of fat that was fed on in autumn. The she-bear, on the other hand, gives birth to her cubs in winter, who first explore nature a few weeks old at the beginning of spring. You will get to know a spiny animal , coyotes and the dangerous rattlesnake , at the sight of which the mother bear sounds a warning call. Both bear cubs immediately climb the next tree, as they learned from their mother. That the playful bear cubs climb the trees for fun is less of a promise to the she-bear: it should only be the way out of real dangerous situations. One such example is the appearance of a male bear who would kill the cubs if he found them away from their mother.

After a year, the young bears have grown larger. The mother, who only gives birth every two years, still takes care of the cubs. They are shown eating - as omnivores they also eat grass, fish and honey - and playing, but also during digestive sleep . They like to wrestle with fellow animals, with the younger animals learning from the older ones, and they enjoy swimming in summer. They pay special attention to scratching themselves. During the mating season in late summer, the mood changes and the adult bears fight each other bitterly, so that all of the younger conspecifics take refuge in the trees. But even in a fight, the bear is fair and honest. In autumn the mother bear is pregnant again. She now has to put the two-year-old on her own feet and manages to do it by driving her up in the trees with all her authority. Then she leaves and does not return. Some bear cubs stay in the tree for days before hunger forces them to the ground. Only now does their adult life begin. They provide food and eat a layer of fat in the fall before instinctively looking for a cave in the winter and finally falling into hibernation.
