Perris Adventure (original title Perri ) is an American animal "feature film" by the directors N. Paul Kenwortny Jr. and Ralph Wright from 1957. The screenplay by Ralph Wright and Winston Hibler is based on the story The youth of the squirrel Perri (1938) by Felix Salten . The recordings were made in the Jackson Hole Nature Park in Wyoming and in the Uintah National Forest in collaboration with the US Forestry Administration and the US and Utah Fisheries and Hunting Administration. Nevertheless, it is not a common documentary nature film because the strip tells a continuous story and with a lot of music and interspersed songs resembles an "animal operetta ". The music for the film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Film Music in 1958 . Nine cameramen were busy capturing countless scenes with various squirrels on celluloid , from which Felix Salten's story was then painstakingly assembled. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the film was first released on October 31, 1958.

action

The squirrel girl Perri saw the light of day only a few days ago and is now spending her childhood in the safe Kobel , protected by her mother. The child does not yet know anything about the dangers that lurk outside the nest. But he is not spared the bad experience: a marten , the main enemy of all squirrels, kills Perri's mother and his siblings. Perri now has to see for herself how she can cope with life. She studies her environment down from the tree: the mother raccoon takes her cubs for a walk and a fox drags a freshly hunted rabbit into her home cave. In the forest lake, the beavers build their huge dams and the deer , who feels like the king of the forest, guards his cute children in a clearing . In addition to the marten, the wild cat Perri and her fellow cats make life difficult. More than once she can only barely escape the enemy.

Perri grows up to be a dashing lady. Time has taught them that life is one great struggle for existence. Nature is sometimes cruel: eat and be eaten is the motto. And on a beautiful autumn day, Perri discovers something completely new and beautiful: love! Porro is the name of the lucky one she begins to adore.

A soft blanket of snow covers the country. While most animals have sunk into hibernation , Perri has a wonderful dream: squirrels glide in flight over a silver moon, animals dance peacefully next to each other, magical melodies fill the air. Porro shows her his love.

Spring is finally approaching again. Perri enjoys the awakening of nature with her boyfriend. But suddenly the sky darkens. A thunderstorm starts a forest fire. Perris Nest also falls victim to the flames. Porro can just escape into a hole in the ground. Perri lunges at an object that moves in no time at all to the Beaver Lake. When she arrived at her destination, she found out that the wildcat had saved her life, albeit unintentionally. Finally, the catastrophe gives way to redemption. A heavy downpour extinguishes the fire. Perri immediately starts looking for her lover. She gets in the way of the marten again. It would almost have happened to her if Porro hadn't discovered the danger and driven the marten into the cat's clutches. The two croissants hug each other happily and enjoy the day.

criticism

“Animal fiction arranged as a show operetta from Disney's nature workshop: The experiences of a young squirrel from birth to mating. [...] An amazing, masterfully illustrated film experience. Without natural history intentions. "
