The Alaskan Eskimo is an American documentary - short film from the year 1953 . The film, produced by Walt Disney , won the Oscar for “ Best Documentary Short ” at the 1954 Academy Awards . The Alaskan Eskimo is the first in the "People and Places" series produced by Walt Disney.

The film deals with the life of the Eskimos in Alaska and tells of the way in which the people there defy ice and snow and live with the forces of nature. The camera shows how the men build a boat and the women of the village make the boat skin from leather. The narrator goes into the simple, primitive tools people work with and calls the results of the work “amazing”. Traditional and modern hunting methods are shown as well as the women of the village who go to collect nuts and fruits in order to be able to stock up on supplies for the winter. The trade in fur is also discussed. Kogane, one of the Eskimos, exchanges furs at a trader's shop for goods that he cannot make himself. In the following, the manufacture of clothing and traditional weapons, handicrafts and food are discussed.
