Paradise , French title Paradis , German festival title Paradies is a Canadian animated short film by Ishu Patel from 1984.

action

A blackbird flies to a sultan's palace and sees through the window how the sultan is enjoying the beauty of a bird. This bird has a magnificent plumage that seems to change colors and is of unimaginable beauty. He flies to ethereal music in a separate room in the palace and is otherwise kept in a large, golden cage.

The blackbird flies through the jungle, collecting petals from flowers and feathers from birds. She builds a colorful plumage out of the material and flies clumsily back to the palace. In front of the Sultan, she performs an awkward dance and is put in a small bird cage that is hung from a tree outside the palace. The wind carries the cage away, and the cage breaks on impact. When the blackbird awakens from its swoon, it realizes that the bird had to pay a high price for its beauty: the loss of freedom. She now flies cleanly through the area and enjoys the beauties of nature and its feathered inhabitants, including a peacock and birds of paradise .

production

Paradise was realized in multiple recordings as well as cut-out and cel animation. With the help of background lighting, Patel achieved images that have the depth of holograms .

The instrumental piece Lonely Shepherd , written by James Last , can be heard during the scenes of the miracle bird . The title was recorded by Gheorghe Zamfir .

Awards

Paradise was in 1985 for an Oscar in the category " animated Best Short Film " nomination, but could not against Charade prevail.

The film won the Silver Bear in the short film category at the 1985 Berlinale . At the Los Angeles International Animation Festival received Paradise first prize.
