During the Second World War she was active as a radio mechanic in the Royal Navy and after the end of the war she worked as a saleswoman in a glass factory. She was drawn to the attention of Gaumont British Animation by a self-designed Christmas card, which she hired as a tracer in 1948. Macaulay soon rose to head the drawing department. She stayed with Gaumont until 1951 and then took on smaller jobs at various companies. From 1953 Macaulay, who now had a husband and two children and had moved to Scotland, worked as a freelancer for television and advertising, among other things. In 1960 Macaulay went to the United States, where her husband became active as a filmmaker. She freelanced for him as well as for the Canadian NFB and Hilary Harris Films.

In 1969, Macaulay first worked for Potterton Productions as coordinator of the animators and in other organizational and controlling functions. Macaulay moved to Canada in 1973 and joined the NFB in the same capacity. With John Weldon , Macaulay created the short animated film Special Delivery in 1978 , which remained her only directorial work, and for which she received an Oscar in 1979 . Macaulay was mainly active as a producer and screenwriter: She worked as a screenwriter, among other things, on the Oscar-nominated film Paradise by Ishu Patel and produced George and Rosemary , for which she received her second Oscar nomination in 1988.
