St Helen’s ( Cornish : Enys Elidius ) belongs to the Isles of Scilly and is located 500 m northwest of Teän and 1.5 km northeast of Tresco . The highest point of the 20 hectare , uninhabited island is 42 m above sea level.
The island got its name from St. Elidius , who built a monastery here in the 8th century and was also buried in it. A chapel was built in his honor, which was a place of pilgrimage in the early Middle Ages.
St. Helen's is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is administered by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust . As in most of the Isles of Scilly, there are several stone tombs of various sizes on St. Helen's .
Plague house
The St. Helen's Isolation Hospital is a corporation founded in 1764 Quarantine Station. Patients who went ashore in Old Grimsby or St. Helen's were treated here . Only the restored foundation walls and the associated cemetery remain of the station today.
