Teän ([ ˈtiː.ən ], Cornish ) belongs to the Isles of Scilly and is located 1.5 km west of Tresco and 300 m east of St. Martin’s . The 16 hectare , uninhabited island is characterized by boulder clay and boulders from the last ice age . Granite blocks form the Great Hill , the highest point on the island at 40 m above sea level.
The island is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is managed by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust .
Stone figures and stone graves suggest a settlement as early as the Bronze Age . When the tide is out , wall remains from the Romano-British culture can also be seen. In later times the island was apparently abandoned and used as a pasture until the middle of the twentieth century.
Flora and fauna
Teän is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) . In addition to the very rare carnations , potash salty herbs and legumes , the island has another great variety of plants. Bracken , German ryegrass , meadow clover , field clover , black knapweed , beach carnation and clover herbs are native here. Furthermore, can be found for the Isles of Scilly typical species such as puffins , kittiwakes , gulls , herring gulls , black-backed gulls and for the UK extremely rare Formica Rufibarbis .
