Bryher is an island in the Isles of Scilly and part of the Duchy of Cornwall . The 122 hectare island is at its highest point 42 m above sea level. Bryher is separated from its neighboring island Tresco by the Trescochannel . During low tide it is possible to hike to the opposite island by foot. To the south of the island is the uninhabited island of Samson , to the west is Gweal , which is also uninhabited . Bryher is mostly just above sea level and is characterized by pastures and farmland. Most of the island's 83 inhabitants live in the town of the same name, Bryher.
Hell's Bay is a notorious shoal off Bryher. Many ships ran aground in the bay in the 18th and 19th centuries.
fauna
The island is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty , and is co-managed by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust . On Bryher include kittiwakes , herring gulls , black-backed gulls , herring gulls , razorbills , shags and petrels home.
tourism
There is a hotel and several holiday apartments on Bryher. In addition to the sandy beaches and All Saint’s Church , hikes on the island are popular with tourists.
The film When the Whales Came and parts of the television series The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn were shot on Bryher.
Bryher is also the setting in novels by Michael Morpurgo , Sam Llewellyn ( Hell Bay ) and Martha Grimes ( Inspector Jury and The Dead on the Beach ).
