Sam Llewellyn
Sam Llewellyn (* 1948 on Tresco , Isles of Scilly ) is a British author of sailing thrillers and children's novels.
Life
Sam Llewellyn was born in 1948 on Tresco, an island in the Isles of Scilly, a group of islands at the most south-westerly point of the British Isles in the Atlantic . His family had lived there for 170 years and could therefore count themselves among the locals.
Thanks to a good education, he initially worked as an editor for Pan Books and gallery owner. The couple moved to Toronto after marrying Karen Wallace, a Canadian award-winning children's author . With the night yacht races in the harbor and the vast expanses of water of Lake Huron , his passion for sailing was revived. From then on he sailed during his free time with a small Ackroyd dinghy and a tent under the foredeck along the extensive shoreline. After a few years on a rocky island in the middle of the lake, Toronto grew tired of them and moved to the seclusion of Ireland's Munster Blackwater , where they had a concession to fish for eels for a brief but interesting time .
For the past 20 years the family has lived with their two sons in a medieval farmhouse in Herefordshire which has a large garden and a collection of boats, all of which are in varying degrees of refurbishment.
For several months of the year Sam Llewellyn goes on extensive sailing excursions for his research. He has explored most of the sailing areas from the Baltic Sea to the Turkish Adriatic , off Maine , the West Indies and the northwest of the Pacific . In search of facts and anecdotes, he took part in the hunt for pirates in the Philippines , crossed the Pacific on board a decrepit freighter and rowed from North Wales to London . It was precisely this rowing trip along the River Severn that turned out to be the hardest of his trips due to the permanent bad rainy weather and was processed in his book The Worst Journey in the Midlands (1983).
Every year he makes a pleasure trip to the west coast of Scotland to sail in an open boat among the whales .
He writes on his novels most of the year. He also publishes articles on cruising , individual tourism and the environment in the London Times , Daily Telegraph , Independent , Yachting Monthly , Classic Boat and Sailing magazine . His novels have so far been translated into twelve languages.
His novel Tödliches Watt ties in with Robert Erskine Childer's The Riddle of the Sandbank from 1903 and offers new possibilities for interpretation from a modern perspective.
