Karl Aagard Østvig , also Karl Aagard Oestvig , (born May 17, 1889 in Christiania ; † July 21, 1968 in Oslo ), was a Norwegian opera singer ( tenor ), opera director and vocal teacher.

Life

Østvig took private singing lessons in Germany with Wilhelm Cappele Kloed and later studied at the Cologne University of Music with Fritz Steinbach and Ludwig Wüllner . In 1914 he made his debut as a tenor at the Stuttgart State Opera , where he was employed artist for the next five years. In 1915 he played there the “lay brother Giovanni de Salviati” in the world premiere of the opera Mona Lisa by Max von Schillings . In 1917 he was a guest singer at the Theater Basel and in 1919 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich .

Østvig was the first tenor of the Vienna State Opera from 1919 to 1926 . During this time he got to know Maria Rajdl at the opera , whom he married. In 1919 he sang at the world premiere of the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss (libretto: Hugo von Hofmannsthal ) in Vienna . In 1923 he went on an extensive concert tour through Europe and North America . In 1926 he made guest appearances at the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest and the Hamburg State Opera . From 1927 he worked at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin . This engagement lasted until 1930. In 1928 one of his appearances as "Max" in Jonny plays on was interrupted by Nazi troublemakers. In 1933 he had his last appearance as an opera singer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Østvig and his wife went to Norway in 1932 and both worked there as singing teachers. In the same year Østvig began directing in Oslo. After the occupation of Norway by the German Wehrmacht in World War II , he took over the management of the Oslo Opera House . After the end of the war he was imprisoned for a while as a collaborator ( Quisling ).

Østvig lived in Oslo until the end of his life. His son Karl Aagard jr. was SS-Untersturmführer in the 11th SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Division "Nordland" during the Second World War . He fell on December 25, 1944 on the Eastern Front in the Modlin Fortress north of Warsaw .
