John Weldon (Animator)
John Felix Weldon (born May 11, 1945 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a Canadian animator .
Life
Weldon grew up in Montreal and studied mathematics and psychology at McGill University , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He then attended MacDonald Teachers' College for a year. After completing his studies, Weldon worked for a short time as a trainee in an insurance agency. In his spare time he wrote a musical and a play, and wrote and illustrated a comic strip with Pipkin Papers . He joined the National Film Board of Canada as a freelance animation assistant in 1970 and began working as an illustrator and tracer. From 1975 Weldon was involved in numerous films as a director and screenwriter, where he had taught himself the basics of animated filming. He received an Oscar in 1979 for Special Delivery , which he directed with Eunice Macaulay .
In 2003 the NFB published a brief retrospective of Weldon's work under the title John Weldon's Deeper Dementia . Anima Mundi paid tribute to Weldon's work in 2004: "Regardless of which technique he uses, drawing, puppets, electronic data processing, Weldon is always keen to make people think through humor or, conversely, to make the universe of thought laugh".
In 2004 he retired; his last film for the NFB was Home Security . Since then he has been writing songs and working on comics.
Weldon is married; the marriage has a son and a daughter.
