action

There are many reasons to be frustrated in the life of the 13 year old Dayveon, or "Day" as his friends call him. Big brother Trevor was killed in an exchange of fire in 2014. Presumably this happened while doing business with members of a local gang. An oversized airbrushed portrait in Dayveon's room reminds of him, and a loaded pistol is the only thing Trevor left behind. Dayveon keeps this secret treasure in a shoebox, which he rummages in when he's alone in the house. When he's on the road, he rides his bike through the deserted streets of his economically troubled city in Arkansas , where Dayveon lives with his older sister Kim and her friend Brian, who works as a mechanic. For him they are the remainder of the kinship he has left. Although the tall but meek Brian tries to be a male role model for the boy, the violent members of a gang also exert their attraction on Dayveon. Because Dayveon is a little idiot, he eventually overcomes his grief by joining the "Blood" gang. To do this, he has to undergo their ritual of acceptance, which consists of blows. The gang commits bumbling robberies and Brian must try to get the boy back on track.

production

Directed by Amman Abbasas to his feature film debut it is. Abbasas comes from Little Rock in Arkansas and wrote the script as well as the music for the film and texted the accompanying texts. He was assisted by David Gordon Green and James Schamus as executive producers . In addition to Abbasi himself, Lachion Buckingham and Alexander Uhlmann acted as producers of the film . While working on the script, which he wrote with Steven Reneau , Abbasi received input from local gang members and committed amateur actors with whom he cast the main characters in the film. Devin Blackmon took on the title role of Dayveon. Lachion Buckingham plays Mook, Dontrell Bright plays Brian and Kordell Johnson plays Brayden. Chasity Moore plays Dayveon's sister Kim in the movie.

The camera work was done by Dustin Lane . The shooting took place in Arkansas , which is also the location of the film.

The film celebrated its world premiere on February 19, 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival , where it opened the NEXT section. The film was presented during the Berlinale in February 2017 as part of the International Forum for New Cinema.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 70 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Variety's Guy Lodge compares the film to the film Moonlight , partly because of a similarly complex, multi-layered story with a vaguely defined identity . According to Lodge, the film shows a community that has hitherto been largely invisible in films, and the uncompromising use of the strong regional accent of the actors, which Amman Abbasi used, will take a while to be understood by the viewer. The performances of the actors, according to Lodge, were unaffected across the board, and Devin Blackmon is convincing as the film's secret hero. This organic, human element is complemented by the mise en scène built up in the film , whereby Dustin Lane plays with the colors in his camera work, such as in a beatings scene in which he uses a bloody red and white in a strong contrast to the natural hues of grass and dust.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire says Abbasi is breathing new life into a familiar coming-of-age story with his debut film by telling it with a sense of the truth that has become rare. Like all other actors, Kordell Johnson and Devin Blackmon played their roles believably, and their performances were both nuanced and naturalistic, Ehrlich said.

Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress says: “'Dayveon' is pure indie cinema . Unused actors, modest means when shooting. The story of the would-be crook is told without a stressful forefinger and, above all, credibly. The camera gimmicks with which Abbasi tries in some places to make a really big cinema in the style of 'Moonlight' from the intimate piece don't bother either. "
