Sigrid Karolina Sofia Fridman (born November 23, 1879 in Haparanda , † January 8, 1963 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish sculptor .

biography

Fridman initially trained as a physiotherapist . In this profession she worked in London for a while. She visited a sculptor's studio in town after her interest in art was piqued. In 1912 she moved to Paris , where she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with Antoine Bourdelle . After returning to Sweden in the early 1920s, she created various animal sculptures for institutions in Gothenburg , including a sea horse and a walrus for an insurance company and a penguin fountain for the Natural History Museum .

She later settled in Stockholm, where one of her most important works was created, the Centaur . Here Fridman met the envy of her male colleagues and the rejection of male critics. The planned placement of the Centaur on Norrmalmstorg did not materialize in 1928. Not until 1939 was a spot found on a hill next to the observatory . Her portrayals of personalities from the women's rights movement, such as Fredrika Bremer and Ellen Key, were panned during her lifetime . Only after her death did her work receive due recognition. In the Swedish biographical lexicon , her style is described as "clear, powerful modeling in the spirit of Bourdelle" and her portrayals of people are ascribed to great attention to detail.

Sigrid Fridman made several study trips to other European countries until 1947. She participated in exhibitions in Copenhagen , Paris, Vienna , Helsinki and in her home country.
